Hirenallur Village : Mallikarjuna Temple

The Mallikarjuna Temple at Hirenallur is a Hoysala era construction. Hirenallur is a village, about 12 km from KadurChikkamagaluru district, in the Karnataka state, India.

The monument is protected by the Karnataka state division of Archaeological Survey of India. The monument which was in a state of dis-repair was renovated around 2004 by the "Sri Dharmasthala Manjunathaeshwara Dharmothana Trust", with assistance of the Department of Culture, Government of India.

We came from Chitradurga to Hirenallur as we wanted to reach chikmaglur as it was our destination.

We came via Hosdurga , Sollapura and giriyapura as road was under construction we took time to reach this place.

This place was one of our friend Raju Native as he forced us to stop here and see this temple, amazing and wonderful experience we enjoyed here and ended up in writing this blog to share with you all.

Hoysala Empire between the 11th and 14th centuries, in the region known today as Karnataka, a state of India. Hoysala influence was at its peak in the 13th century, when it dominated the Southern Deccan Plateau region.

The empire is remembered today primarily for its temple architecture. Over a hundred surviving temples are scattered across Karnataka.
Large and small temples built during this era remain as examples of the Hoysala architectural style, including the Chennakesava Temple at Belur, the Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu, and the Kesava Temple at Somanathapura.

Other examples of Hoysala craftsmanship are the temples at BelavadiAmruthapuraHosaholaluMosaleArasikereBasaraluKikkeri and Nuggehalli (my native) I'm Proud to say admit it.

God Mallikarjuna in Hirenallur Temple

Temples built prior to Hoysala independence in the mid-12th century reflect significant Western Chalukya influences, while later temples retain some features salient to Chalukyan art but have additional inventive decoration and ornamentation, features unique to Hoysala artisans.

Some three hundred temples are known to survive in present-day Karnataka state and many more are mentioned in inscriptions, though only about seventy have been documented.

The greatest concentrations of these are in the Malnad (hill) districts, the native home of the Hoysala kings.

According to historian Sheldon Pollock, the Hoysala era saw the complete displacement of Sanskrit, with Kannada dominating as the courtly language.Kannada was used to state terms of the grants, including information on the land, its boundaries, the participation of local authorities, rights and obligations of the grantee, taxes and dues, and witnesses. This ensured the content was clearly understood by the local people without ambiguity.
